About us

Organization logo with text "How did we get here?"

In 2014, a group of colleagues who met through different organizations got together to reconnect and find a way to support each other’s success. They wanted to share resources and have fun while giving back to their communities and mentoring younger professionals. This is how the HBN was established, with a mission to become involved in the community and be exemplary servant leaders.

The founding members were both first-generation college students.  This is why the scholarship fund was created. Today, the HBN is a 100% volunteer-based organization focusing on career development, community involvement, cultural awareness, and commerce. The volunteers come from various industries and backgrounds, and all share a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of others.

Today, the HBN is a 100% volunteer-based organization that focuses on career development, community involvement, cultural awareness, and commerce. These volunteers come from many industries, have jobs and families, and all have ONE thing in common; they are passionate about making an impact on the lives of others.

With our dedicated team and the extensive support of the community, HBN has been able to accomplish the following:

  • Bring smiles to over 30,000 CPS children from needy families (from over 20 schools in the City of Chicago and surrounding suburbs). We also brought smiles to children at Lydia Home, Gads Hill Center, Cornerstone Community Outreach, Youth Crossroads just to name a few. Our Act of Kindness campaign is held on the first Friday in December and is hosted by Morton College. Sponsors can support an individual child or children or just donate to the general fund.
  • Award over $19,000 in scholarships since 2019.
  • 2023 – Awarded 6 additional scholarships to first generation Latine students.
  • Partner with Top Box Foods and recruited volunteers to deliver over 3000 meals to residents living in food deserts.
  • Establish collaborations with 10 Corporate ERGs for professional development and cultural awareness.
  • Successfully host an Inspira Forum in collaboration with our partners at Huntington Bank.
  • Host an annual golf outing – the 2023 outing took place on three courses at Cog Hill. Next year’s outing is on the first Friday in August which is 8/2/24.
  • In July 2023, received a $15,000 grant from the Enterprise Holding Foundation and their ROAD Forward Initiative.

BIG goals for 2024

  1. Award double the amount of scholarships
  2. Expand the network to include the North and Southwest Suburbs
  3. Bring smiles to 1500 children
